The first auction item I purchased was a framed photo of Martin Luther King Jr. with a printed copy of the full text of his “I have a dream” speech. It’s a speech that moves me to tears. Today I realize that I have a dream too. It is a small one.
I have a dream today…
I have a dream that we all, individually and collectively, take a moment today to think about what we can do to make our families, community, and world a better and stronger place. What change do we wish to see and how can we contribute to it? No matter how small, each action we can take will have an impact. Therefore we can afford to act many times.
I have a dream that we ask ourselves if our beliefs, opinions, and actions trample unnecessarily on those around us. And if they do, that we stop long enough to ask why we wish to trample on those around us. I have a dream that we accept differences in religion, gender, race, or sexual orientation are not sufficient answers.
I have a dream that we all think about what personal wrongs we should right – whether one we committed or feel was committed upon us. We must decide what action would right it – and initiate that action. And if it is not worth acting to right this wrong, then let it go from our hearts, minds, and accounting.
I have a dream that we look for an opportunity to give to someone today – and seize it. And do the same tomorrow… and the day after.
I have a dream that we all embrace our capacity to Give a little and Live a little more. Each day.
